Boeing, Microsoft Face Seattle Snow as Flights Canceled

Article by ERUM

“Airlines canceled flights out of Seattle, Microsoft Corp. employees worked from home via teleconference and Starbucks Corp. shut its headquarters as a winter snowstorm hit the normally rainy city” “Two to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) of snow blanketed city streets by mid-morning and another 2 to 4 inches may fall before the storm ends overnight, the National Weather Service said. Earlier forecasts were for as much as 12 inches, which would have been the city’s biggest snowfall in 27 years”

“The region, where major employers also include Boeing Co. and lacks the plows of places that get snow more regularly, and hilly terrain complicates travel. Public schools and the University of Washington in Seattle told students to stay home today” “”For a city that is known more for its rain than its snow, this is going to be a big snowstorm,” said Andy Haner, a National Weather Service forecaster in Seattle. “The other big issue here is our hills. San Francisco is known for its hills but Seattle isn’t that far behind”

“Alaska Air Group Inc., the largest carrier at Seattle- Tacoma International Airport, had canceled 47 flights by Alaska Air and its Horizon”

Juggling Flights”We selected flights in markets where we fly several times a day so that we can reaccommodate customers as quickly as possible” said Paul McElroy, a spokesman for the Seattle-based carrier. “We’re doing our best to operate flights to the Midwest and East Coast, and to Hawaii so folks can get to some warmth and sunshine” “Runways are open and some carriers canceled flights “proactively,” the airport said on its website” “Starbucks, which operates the world’s largest chain of coffee shops, closed its headquarters in Seattle yesterday and said it would consider shutting individual shops neighborhood by neighborhood” “Chicago-based Boeing, which makes jetliners in the Seattle area, told employees in a recorded messagode tay that it’s monitoring the storm and hasn’t made any changes to its operations. Workers in Washington and Oregon were expected to work their normal shifts”

Microsoft Preparations”Microsoft planned to keep in touch with its staff through an e-mail alert system, said John Cinroe, director of employee communications at the company” “The vast majority of our employees are able to work remotely, so we would foresee very little impact on our business,” he said by e-mail”

“Amy Barzdukas, a general manager at Microsoft, said members of her server software marketing team were working from their homes using personal computers, mobile phones and a Microsoft teleconferencing program called Lync. She said some “hardy souls” were thinking of venturing to the company’s Redmond campus, which never closes”

“Costco Wholesale Corp., the largest U.S. warehouse club chain, didn’t anticipate any major disruptions at a distribution center it operates in the region, said Franz Lazarus, senior vice president of global operations at the company, based in Issaquah, Washington, east of Seattle”

“When these snow events happen, some parts of the community are affected and some are not,” Lazarus said. “I’ve got to make sure the parking lots are clean”

Olympia Snowfall”Cities along the Interstate 5 corridor south of Seattle, including the state capital of Olympia, got 8 to 18 inches of snow today, said Danny Mercer, a meteorologist with the weather service in Seattle”

“The snow may turn icy by tomorrow, making travel difficult, and then melt within a few days, possibly causing flooding”

“We’re really discouraging travel”"Ski areas in the mountains east of Seattle and Portland welcomed the snow to make up for a dry December” “We’ve got what everyone has been dreaming about — lots of deep powder,” said Hans Wipper, operations manager at Mount Hood Skibowl, east of Portland, where forecasts called for 1 to 3 feet of snow” “It’s winter, finally,” said Drew Jackson, a spokesman for Mount Bachelor ski resort, near Bend, Oregon”

“Pike Place Fish Market in downtown Seattle, where workers are known for entertaining tourists by throwing fish, opened to empty concourses”

“We’ll stay open as long as they let us,” said Samuel Samson, manager at the market. It’s been about 15 years since snow forced a shutdown”

“With assistance from Dina Bass, Britton Staniar, Susanna Ray, Hui-yong Yu and Steve McPherson in Seattle; Anthony Effinger in Portland Brian K.Sullivan in Boston and Mary Jane Credeur in Atlanta”

Article by Ajit

Edinburgh International is Scotland’s fastest rising airport having opened in 2001 and now managing over five million passengers serving 56 destinations worldwide. There are more than 30 daily flights to London’s five airports, and you can fly to most European cities from Edinburgh Airport on planned and charter flights. You can obtain full details on all the airlines and holiday companies in service out of Edinburgh, where they fly to and their contact details.

There are plans to get bigger Edinburgh Airport by adding a further runway, although this is improbable to be required within the next 20 years. BAA has recently made provision for an addition to the existing runway, which would tolerate larger aircraft to serve longer haul destinations, and it is predicted that by 2030 Edinburgh Airport will be Scotland’s busiest, handling 26 million passengers every year.

If you are preparation to hire a car when you arrive at Edinburgh Airport, there are six major car rental companies located in the UK Arrivals Area of the terminal building. There are also rent a car agencies outside the airport perimeter as well as managerial, chauffeur and limousine services.

Edinburgh Airport is located just 12km west of the city centre and trouble-free to reach with a good bus service operating from the airport to the City Centre, Railway Station and other local areas.

You can get to and from Edinburgh Airport by a range of methods as well as a Private Transfer when you would be met in the arrivals hall by your own driver who will have a car waiting to take you on to your chosen destination. Or you might prefer to jump into a taxi: there are three taxi ranks located at the Eastern end of the terminal building, the coach park and on the ground floor of the short stay multi storey car park (available for pre-booked taxis only).

The terminal structure is reasonably small so it is easy to find your way around. It is split into two floors with lift access to the first floor. Check in, UK and International arrivals are all on the ground floor. There is a good range of shops and eating and drinking outlets to choose from both previous to and after security. You can obtain live flight arrivals and live flight departures information.

If you want to leave you car at the airport, there are several options for parking: pick up, short stay, long stay and valet parking. You can obtain details on the these tariff as well as information on luggage storage facilities at Edinburgh Airport. Finally our general information details resources for children, disabled facilities, internet access, First Aid centres, pet travel and where you can change your money at Edinburgh Airport as well as full details on the weather at Edinburgh Airport and the surrounding area with a 5 and 10 day forecast.

I used to live there. What you list is fine for this time of year. But take a umbrella. The odd shower is not uncommon. Also a light jacket for early mornings and evenings But that’s about it. The standard “uniform” of T-shirts and Jeans are appropriate for this time of year.

Finding cheap flights for winter sun holidays

Finding cheap flights for winter sun holidays

The new winter timetable is about to take effect where traditionally airlines cut the number of routes on offer for this quieter trading period however with the current economic conditions many were worried if it would spell the end of cheap flights.

Well fear not as this year as while airlines have cut back on many routes they are offering new routes to many winter sunshine locations with many operators competing on the same routes then cheap flights will still be available this year as they fight to fill their capacity.

Tel Aviv

The Israeli city of Tel Aviv is a laid-back place which loves to party so will popular with those in their 20’s and 30’s. There are many historical and religious sightseeing opportunities in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem is only around one days travel away. Enjoy winter sunshine and find cheap flights from early November as the route starts to be serviced by the no frills airlines from Luton joining the route from Manchester. Prices are set to be around 50% cheaper than offered by the full-service airlines.

The Canaries

This will be your best holiday destination for finding the cheapest flights away for winter. One of the major no frills airlines based in Ireland will begin offering cheap flights to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote from nine UK airports as well as five more routes to Tenerife. This means The Canaries are better served this year so should actually be possibly to get cheaper flights than last year. Especially as the airlines are targeting the more profitable routes so consumers should benefit from the increased competition. A quick search and you can get a return flight in November from around £60.

The Canaries offers fantastic big beaches, beautiful mountain scenery and if you are into your water sports then there is windsurfing.

Government Air Passenger Duty

If you fly no frills we are used to being aware of hidden charges however this time it’s the government. The Government Air Passenger Duty tax will take effect from November 1st. The tax will add £1 to short-haul flights, an economy flights to the Caribbean will mean an extra £10 per person and for longer flights such as to Australia it will £15 per person.

Bear this in mind that it will need to be included when looking for  cheap flights .
